What is counseling?

A holistic approach to psychotherapy that focuses on wellness rather than pathology.

How does counseling differ from other forms of therapy?

It doesn't really.

Who are you?

Hi! I'm Michelle. I live in the Hudson Valley. I like eating and cooking. I like watching the changing seasons and watching television. I like adventures and feeling comfortable. I like running errands and hearing about other people's days. I like speaking plainly and using humor. I like listening and thinking; which has led me here.

What's your experience?

I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York State. Mental Health Counselors, Social Workers and Creative Arts Therapists are Masters-level clinicians who can be licensed to provide psychotherapy and treat mental illness. Mental Health Counselors lean toward wellness, although I'm trained in psychopathology as well. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults and families in community mental health. I come equipped with a history of treating anxiety, depression, PTSD, and grief (to name a few). I am an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community. I enjoy engaging in exploration around spirituality and existential queries. I work with people going through life transitions at any stage, but especially throughout college.

What's your approach?

I prefer to use a holistic approach to therapy. Because I do not accept insurance at this time, I work without diagnoses. However, I enjoy working collaboratively and sometimes putting a name to a client's experience is helpful. In which case, we can work together to find what fits. I have background in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectal Behavioral Therapy; however, I work foremost in a person-centered explorative approach that leans on attachment and psychodynamics. I am skilled in consultation, aiding in organization and realistic goal setting.

What do you need from clients?

Mostly, a willingness to explore. Therapy works best when a trusting relationship is built etween the client and the therapist. If a client isn't feeling quite ready, I like to meet the client in that space. I appreciate patience for my sense of humor. Honesty-- let me know if something's not working. Effective communication and emotional transparency is what we're trying to move toward-- let's practice in session.

What do sessions look like?

Sessions are now virtual! I use HIPAA compliant platforms to see my clients and sessions are usually 45-50 minutes long. Sessions typically occur weekly as clients have so much to share!

Do you take insurance?

I do not take insurance at this time, although documentation can be provided for reimbursement.

Paperwork?!

Yes, but I'll email documents with instructions. Paperwork includes information about informed consent, technology use and payment and fees.

I have to pay to search my soul?

It's true. Session fees are typically $120. Please do not hesitate to reach out with more questions!
